Folded Remediez - March 2006
heatonmoor.com find out more about Folded Remediez
Folded Remediez are a young beatboxing duo who appeared at Moorfest 2005. They had a high profile slot just before Badly Drawn Boy but they didn't fail to deliver with their high energy set. Just two lads on stage with Microphones creating sounds you would normally associate with a range of instruments. It was impressive to say the least. heatonmoor.com caught up with the Lads to have a chat about what they have been up to since Moorfest.
Who are Folded Remediez?
Our names Folded Remediez made up of me Drase (17) and my partner Jam (19). We're also part of a crew called Full FX who are based in Manchester made up of mc's and dj's so big shout out to all of them.
How long have you been beatboxing?
We've both been beatboxing about 3 years but professionally about a year and under management for about 6 months.
How and when did you meet?
I met Jam when were still in high school and 'jammed' with him a few times around places that we both chilled in, met up again when we both started Xaverian College and did an open mic called Pleasure down in Withington. All started from there.
How did you get the name Folded Remediez?
Jam came up with the name he's never really told me what it's about but I know people remember it so can't argue!
For those that aren't aware of you, explain your sound in your own words/as you see it.
Beatboxing is basically making weird sounding s**t with your mouth! When people see us on stage they don't believe what we're doing and most of them doubt us saying we're using effects and that. So we come out with s**t that can't be done with any machine and they soon start believing. What makes us different from other beat boxers is that we don't just do urban gigs; we take a challenge and do indie gigs as well. So when there are four big base rock bands on then us it's strange for the audience but by the end of the set we have them jumping about and that!
Who are your influences?
Our main influence is a man called Kenny Muhammad who is probably the best beatboxer in the world. He came up with beats like wind and water technique which are used by nearly every beatboxer in the world. Course though big tunes and big beats are our main influence since that's what gets crowds going really.
What gigs have you done recently and what have you got coming up?
We've been recording at the moment more than actually performing getting more into the garage side of music which is what jam and I have wanted to get into since we started beatboxing. We've got some television appearances coming up also and aiming for some more festivals. We're also working with the company GMMAZ who have set us up with workshops with young kids like us all around the country. Our new DVD is out soon also so watch out for that being sold at gigs and everywhere!
What have been the best, worst and biggest gigs you have done?
Our biggest gig, and one of our best, would be at the Manchester Apollo supporting The Doves. It was mad since we had only done open mics before it and we were thrown into a huge gig like that! Both nights were mint and it was a challenge since we completely unknown and first on!
Another great gig is doing nights like 'Battlescars' and 'Ape' since we're well known and always do a good performance.
Did you enjoy yourselves at Moorfest 2005?
Yeah it was a class day! We were ready for it since we had done D-Percussion the week before so we were ready for the whole festival vibe. Being on before Badly Drawn boy at Moorfest and then being on after him at D Percussion was a great compliment.
If it goes ahead would you get involved with Moorfest 2006?
Definitely. We'd get more prepared for it this time as well since we didn't even write a set out for it last time… still went well though!
Where would you like to be in 5 years time?
Who knows! This workshop thing is what I think will help us make a career out of beatboxing but if we can make a living out of being on stage and producing tracks then that would be ideal for us!
Thank you Drase and Jam.
Folded Remediez perform regular gigs in central manchester. Be sure to look out for them.
