La Casona is the only tapas bar in Heaton Moor, and the best. Tucked away on Shaw Road it is certainly worth a visit (or three). We felt very welcome in the small restaurant with its warm atmosphere, cheerful decor and friendly staff.
If you go as a couple ask to sit towards the back where the atmosphere is more intimate; if you take friends the staff will happily seat your larger (and noisier) group at the front.
We spent ages choosing what to order from the extensive menu so we ordered a bowl of marinated olives and a bottle of delicious Chilean red wine to be going on with. The olives were green and sweet and very more-ish. Another choice for tasters is the Spanish version of garlic bread (pan con ajo), where garlic, or tomato with onion, or tomato with garlic are baked into the bread. An alternative would be the plate of mixed starters including tasty Manchego cheese and cold meats such as chorizo.
We decided to order a selection of tapas to share and the food arrived quickly. The first dish to hit the table was sizzling king prawns in a lip-tingling garlic and chilli sauce, excellent for dipping bread into. Both the prawns and the spare ribs were generous portions, really meaty and tender. The calamari too were cooked to perfection.
La Casona’s dishes are influenced by northern Spanish and Basque country recipes and include some interesting combinations. We enjoyed the strong flavour of the chorizo in cider which melted in the mouth and the sweet roasted onions (cebolles rellenes) stuffed with tuna. The fish dumplings are really fishy and the restaurant speciality of chicken in white wine and saffron is delicate and tender.
There is something for everyone at La Casona. They have a good selection of wines, a choice of salads and very filling paellas including the Basque Paella a la Vasca with chicken and chorizo. All their dishes are to ‘take-away’ and for a small deposit can be supplied in traditional earthenware dishes, which is wonderful if you’re having a party.
We’re going back soon to sample more of the delights of the menu…

Nice spanish restaurant. Went there with my wife and had the early offer; £9.95 for 3 tapas and they were all nice even though a bit average. Very good service and a very good bottle of vine. Will be back soon. From Heaton Norris - submitted 4/07/07 13:57
